We hope you are all enjoying the new school year so far. Thanks to those of you who stopped by to visit us at the RSO fair, and welcome to those of you who just joined the mailing list!
Now on to the exciting part. The theme for fall quarter’s issue of AU is:
Whether your idea of a monster is classic Hollywood or rocking gold teeth and fangs (thank you, Nicki Minaj!), we want to see it! Humans have invented monsters to represent their deepest fears since we developed the capacity to think of something beyond our next meal. What constitutes a monster? What scares monsters? What do our monsters say about us? You don’t have to answer any of these questions (we’d be impressed if you did!), but feel free to keep them in mind. Whether you want to take a pure horror approach or travel down a satirical path, show us what scares you in your original prose, poetry, or visual art. The fall quarter deadline is November 24th.
For those of you new to AU, we are looking for speculative fiction (that’s sci-fi, fantasy, weird fiction, horror, et cetera) and visual art (covers especially!) of 3000 words or less. We also like photography and other visual art for covers or just to put in the magazine–we’re not picky, and we don’t get a whole lot of it, so please, submit!
We are also looking for a new editor! AU editor duties include reading and editing submissions, meeting with writers for workshops and putting the magazine together. The time commitment fluctuates–sometimes we have little to do, sometimes we have a ton to do. We’re especially looking for juniors or below (to carry on our legacy into 2014 and beyond) who have experience using WordPress and Adobe Photoshop and InDesign, but fitting none of those criteria is certainly not a guaranteed ‘no.’ If interested, please send an e-mail with the subject line ‘Editor Position’ to firstname.lastname@example.org, so we can set up a convenient time to interview you!
As a reminder, you can find current issues of AU in the English Advising office or from us directly. A link to buy the current issue can also be found on our website (strayingfromreality.wordpress.com).
